Carousel cover ideas for the first slide

Updated · 4 min read

The cover of a carousel is its first slide, and it does two jobs: it earns the stop in the feed and it fills a 3:4 tile in the profile grid. Strong covers use one clear subject, a short title in the middle band and a hint that there is more to swipe.

What does a carousel cover have to do?

It has to be understood in about a second, because most people scroll faster than they read. It must also survive a crop. The profile grid shows a 3:4 window of the first slide, so a 4:5 cover loses a thin strip from each side and a square cover loses a quarter of its width, as the 3:4 grid crop guide explains. A cover that depends on its outer edges will lose meaning in the grid.

A cover should also match what comes next. If the first slide promises a panorama and the second shows a menu, people feel tricked and stop swiping.

Which cover ideas work?

These ten cover types cover most accounts. Pick the one that matches the carousel, and reuse it so your profile has a recognizable family.

How big should the text be?

Large enough to read at the size of a grid tile, which is about one third of a phone screen wide. A headline of 100 px or more on a 1080 px slide works, and body-sized text on a cover is wasted. Keep the line short, five to eight words, and use a heavy weight. Contrast matters as much as size, so put light text on dark areas or add a plain panel behind the words. Contrast is the difference in luminance that lets the eye separate a letter from its background.

Where should the title go?

In the middle band. For a 4:5 cover the middle 3:4 window is about 1013 x 1350 px, so a title at least 100 px in from each side stays whole. Seamfold's cover check shades the trimmed zones on panel 1 and labels the cover safe, safe with edges trimmed, or text cropped. It runs while you edit, so you see the effect of each change.

If you export at 3:4, 1080 x 1440 px, the grid tile matches the panel and nothing is cropped. This is the easiest route for a cover that holds a lot of text.

How do you design a panorama cover?

Pick a slice with a clear focal point and room for the eye to move right. The edge of the cover should cut through something interesting rather than empty sky, because the cut is what invites the swipe. A title is optional. If you add one, keep it clear of the first fold, since a word cut between slide 1 and slide 2 is hard to read. The seam check flags this.

What should you avoid on covers?

  • Small text placed near the left or right edge, where the grid crop trims it.
  • Faces cut by the crop line.
  • A busy photo with thin text on top and no panel behind it.
  • Covers that differ in style from one post to the next, which makes the grid look random.
  • Titles that promise more than the carousel gives.
  • Text so large that two words fill the slide and the point is lost.

How do you test a cover?

  1. Export the first slide at the final size.
  2. View it at thumbnail size, as small as a quarter of a phone screen.
  3. Check that you can still say what it is about.
  4. View it as a 3:4 crop in the middle of a three-tile row.
  5. Compare it with the covers next to it in your grid.
  6. Fix anything that is cut, then export the whole set.

Can you test covers in Seamfold?

Yes. The swipe test ends with a row called How it sits in your grid, which draws your cover cropped to 3:4 in the middle of three tiles, and the feed plan lays planned covers next to photos you already posted. Seamfold is in development, and both tools run on the iPhone with no account.

What colors suit a cover?

Pick colors that stand out in a feed full of photos. High contrast pairs such as dark navy with cream, or deep green with a warm orange, stay readable at thumbnail size. Avoid pale gray on white, which vanishes. If your covers are photos, a thin band of solid color behind the title makes the text readable on any picture. Repeat the same two or three colors across posts and the grid will feel designed even before you plan it. The feed layout ideas guide shows patterns that rely on that repetition.

What if the cover is a photo only?

A photo-only cover can be the strongest option, since there is nothing to crop badly. Choose a subject that sits in the middle three quarters of the frame, with the eyes or the focal point near the upper third. Leave breathing room around it so the 3:4 crop does not touch anything important. If the image has a strong line, such as a pier or a road, let it lead toward the next slide. For a panorama, this lead-in is a natural cover and needs no text at all.

How can the cover help a seamless swipe?

Show a hint of slide 2 on the edge of slide 1. In a seamless panorama this happens automatically, because the picture runs off the right edge. In a normal carousel you can imitate it by letting an object or a line cross the right edge of the cover, or by adding a small arrow or the words Swipe in a corner. Do not overdo it. One quiet cue is enough, and a loud arrow tends to look like an ad. The teaser card uses the same idea in stories, by telling viewers there is more to swipe.

A cover checklist

  • One idea on the slide.
  • Text at least 100 px tall for a headline.
  • Title inside the middle 3:4 window.
  • High contrast between text and background.
  • Matches the rest of the carousel.
  • Works at thumbnail size.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a good carousel cover?

One clear subject, a short title of five to eight words in the middle of the slide, strong contrast and a hint that the post continues.

What size should a carousel cover be?

The same as the other slides, 1080 px wide. Use 1080 x 1440 px (3:4) if you want the profile grid to show the whole cover.

Can I choose a different cover for the grid?

The grid shows the first slide of a carousel, so make the cover slide first rather than relying on a separate cover setting.

Should a panorama carousel have text on the cover?

It does not need any. If you add a title, keep it away from the first fold and inside the middle 3:4 window.

How can I check the crop on my cover?

Seamfold's cover check shades the part of panel 1 the 3:4 grid will trim and labels the cover. It is in development.
